  1. So I watched “Film Geek” right after you left and I gotta say — you must have been enamored with the novelty of it. Really, your #1 LOL film of all time? It was cute, but man was that movie clunky. You didn’t mention that it was basically a student film.

The film’s form aside, I gotta say that Scotty fails for me as a true film geek because he doesn’t really ever get into why he likes the movies he references so much. He just calls everything “brilliant” and “amazing” and uses other empty adjectives. I think the only time we here him discuss the content of a film with any depth is after he and his date see that one film whose name escapes me. You could say this it the point of the date: that Niko is the only one who can extract actual conversation about film from Scotty. You could also say this was a parody of the typical film geek who knows mostly trivia but can’t adequately explain why he likes movies.

On another positive note, I did also like the twist ending. It reminded me a bit of “Mulholland Drive”.

Cute movie, but I wouldn’t put it on a laugh-out-loud list.

  2. Defense time. Why you call me out, bee-otch? I told you “Film Geek” made me LOL because of the personal reaction I had. “Did you get a chance to go to my website yet?” is a line I utter at least weekly to people, plus the loser-with-no-girlfriend thing… c’mon! I identified with this character because, in many ways, he is ME. Don’t retroactively knock my picks, son, or I will kill you!

OK, your point about why Scotty fails as a true Film Geek, that he does not elaborate on why he loves the films he loves so much, is EXACTLY WHY he is a Film Geek. You’ve heard my definition of nerds (geeks): they focus on the superficial aspects of a film (director, actors, etc.) but never delve into thematic content. In this way, Scotty is a Film Geek, and to a T.

The film Niko and Scotty watched is called “That Obscure Object of Desire”.

In conclusion, I think this movie is hilarious no matter what you say. The Portland setting + Malkasian’s character + the redemptive ending = I loved it, a lot. And just to be vengeful for your comment, I don’t think “Clueless” is as funny as you do. Sick burn!

  3. Excuse me Miss Dion. I’m sorry you don’t fully appreciate the genius of “Clueless”.

And what’s this about “retroactively” knocking your picks? I hadn’t seen the movie at the time so I couldn’t have knocked it in the moment. I only watched it because you recommended it! So really, this is your fault for recommending an inferior product.

Anyway, I disagree with your definition of a geek. I think geeks are capable of delving into thematic content. To define geek, you have to first define nerd. I think a nerd is someone who obsesses over escapist fiction to a point where he can no longer adequately function in social settings. A geek is just like a nerd, except he somehow retains his ability to socialize and otherwise act as a functioning member of society. The title “Film Geek” is therefore a misnomer because most film geeks are, in fact, film nerds.

  4. Whateva!

  5. It’s always nice to come away with a list of movies to see from a reputable source but I can think of one thing that would assist me more; it would be great if you had your lists of top five picks in a text format somewhere on this site so I don’t have to interrupt what I’m doing to write them down. I’ve already forgotten half of your top five laugh-out-loud films, and though my intentions are good, I may not get around to delving back into this episode to record them on paper for future use. That means there are some funny movies I might never think to see.

Other than that, keep up the good work.

  6. But wouldn’t that spoil the surprise?
