Ep. 13: Public Enemies / Linklater Look Part 2 – Before Sunset / A Scanner Darkly

Evan and Josh bring on guest host Mike Cassella to review Michael Mann’s new film, Public Enemies, as well as close out their Linklater Look with discussions of Before Sunset and A Scanner Darkly.
Music: Au Revoir Simone, “Only You Can Make You Happy” / Intelligence, “The Pony People”

Pretty much felt the same about Public Enemies - it’s disappointing considering the subject matter is pretty damn interesting. Depp slept through this one

Finally you guys review a movie that I’ve actually seen! So now I can comment on it. I don’t know if this was part of the “digital filming” that Evan was talking about, but a problem that I had with this movie was that I was constantly taken out of the action by the flood lights that kept coming on in different scenes. For example, in the woods shootout scene and the final scene, the action looked really fake; it seemed like I was watching just some actors shoot at other actors and I could almost see the director and the cameras in the background. I’ve never seen that in any other movie, but it was a really disappointing part of this one. Did you guys notice that at all?

I hated Before Sunrise, which was why I didn’t bother with Before Sunset. Thanks to your review, I will set aside my prejudice and give the sequel a try.

Good to hear, Noelle! I swear it’s worth your time; it will even justify the time you wasted watching ‘Before Sunrise’.
@ KT - I have no idea what you are talking about. You either have incredible eyesight, or saw it in a particularly crappy theater in Spain.
Evan said this on July 20th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Are you serious?? It must be the former then because I didn’t see it in Spain..it was in Denmark and not too crappy of a theater. You should watch it again and look for the crazy flood lights this time Evan!

Ain’t no way I’m sitting through this movie again. Girl, you broke.

Evan, you do realize I have to moderate and approve your trivial little comments. It’s annoying. So stop it.

Then quit moderating them and start allowing all comments. You’re just bitter because you get excited when you see we have a comment, only to realize it’s just me.

You can’t auto-allow comments on this site. And you’re right, I’d rather get a comment from anyone else. Maybe we should start forging comments - Ron Wilson says, “Great show, guys!”

Lorna Doone says, “Why are you complaining about getting praise for your podcast? Hard work is its own reward. Why when I was a little lass in bonny ol’ England, I didn’t once complain about working all day for little money and now I travel all around the US building houses all day for no money at all! Don’t you wish you could be old and wise like me?”

Yay, a comment that wasn’t Evan’s! Thanks, Katie.
pdxfilmcast said this on July 25th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
ahem. you mean Lorna?
Katie said this on July 26th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
Katie! That comment is a fake; I’m Lorna. Goodness, my name is eerily familiar to that of an X-Men character.
Lorna said this on July 26th, 2009 at 10:31 pm
Ahh! Lorna, how did you find this podcast? And how do you know so much about X-Men? You’ve been following Evan since Louisiana?

I need to figure out how to make a forum in here for… things like this.
