Michael Cera as the new generation of comedy? I don’t thnk I can get on board with that. Has he ever been in stand-up? It seems like he’s just cast as the quirky awkward guy representing a new fad in comedy. I agree with you on Jack Black though. He’s a hit or a miss.

I would say Michael Cera embodies a new wave/style of comedy, even if he isn’t technically a comedian himself. He embodies the whole Judd Apatow/Arrested Development brand of awkward humor in which awkward, relatable characters have to bumble their way through extraordinary situations. The plot around them moves at a fast pace, yet they can barely keep up with talking to a single person without looking like an idiot.

I have been thinking about this topic for a few days. You are right. He’s definately at the forefront of (what I still think is a fad) as the awkward comic.
